Some parents say a flyer promoting a big high school football game also promotes gang activity. And they don't like it.
The flier is for the Mays vs. Stephenson High School football game Friday.
The flier says "Eastside vs. Westside." But the "e" and the "w" are hand signs some say are obvious gang signs.
"Look like gang signs. The westside against the eastside. Those are gang signs," one parent told Channel 2's Tom Jones.
The flier is promoting the regional championship high school football game.
"It's sending the wrong message," said concerned citizen Raynard Johnson. "Those are gang signs."
Johnson says Atlanta Public Schools has had enough problems with gangs and doesn't need the symbols to promote a big game.
"There's nothing to play, or playful, about gangs and kids," Johnson told Jones.
Jones found out an paraprofessional at Mays High School posted the flier on social media. Atlanta Public Schools sent Jones a statement saying they are aware of the flier. Administrators asked that it be removed from the paraprofessional's page.
APS said it was not approved nor endorsed by Mays High or the district.
Now some parents are concerned about the atmosphere at the game.
"And I'm planning to be there at the game too I can't believe that," another parent said.
A Mays High student Kaylin Calloway told Jones the flier is no big deal.
"Not many people will pick up on that's gang language," Calloway said.
Everybody that Jones showed the flyer to thought the symbols were gang signs.
The game is set for Friday at Lakewood stadium.
The school system didn't say if the paraprofessional who posted the flier will be disciplined.
