A hunter in northwestern Belarus had shot a fox once and then tried to kill it with the butt of the rifle, but the animal had other ideas, according to Reuters.

The fox apparently pulled the trigger on the hunter’s gun, allowing the animal to run off and sending the unnamed man to the hospital with a leg wound, said Reuters, using information from prosecutors in a region in Belarus known as Grodno.

“The animal fiercely resisted and in the struggle accidentally pulled the trigger with its paw,” one prosecutor told the media.

Fox hunting is popular in the Grodno region, a picturesque farming area that borders Poland, according to Reuters.
