The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management will observe Fix-A-Leak beginning Monday with a streetcar tour 11:30 a.m. originating at the Peachtree Center stop. The event is an effort to encourage Atlantans to repair leaks around their homes.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the average household can lose approximately 10,000 gallons of water per year, or the equivalent of 270 loads of laundry. Repairing leaks around your home not only saves water, but it saves money as well.
Finding and repairing leaks around your home can be as simple as check, twist and replace: checking toilets for leaks, twisting on a new WaterSense labeled faucet aerator and replacing leaking fixtures. It is extremely important to periodically check toilets, faucets, showerheads, dishwashers, clothes washers, not water heaters, garden hoses and sprinkler systems.
In addition to the tour on Monday, Watershed Management staff will be on location around the city to educate citizens on water conservation and leak detection 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday: Tuesday staff will distribute leak detection tablets at Marietta Street; Wednesday DWM will provide demonstration of tips to conserve water in homes at Atlanta City Hall, 55 Trinity Street; Thursday, in partnership with the Atlanta Regional Commission, DWM will provide education on water conservation and leak repairs at Peachtree Center Mall Food Court.
