Fire officials Wednesday were investigating a blaze that heavily damaged a vacant church in Norcross.

The blaze in the 5700 block of Spalding Drive near Engineering Drive was reported by a passer-by and was well involved from the basement through the roof of the two-story building when crews arrived after 9:30 p.m.,  Gwinnett fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge told the AJC.

"The biggest challenge was the magnitude and intensity of the fire," Rutledge said.

Faith Life Fellowship Church pastor Nathan Ridgeway told Channel 2 Action News that the building was sold to a development group more than a year ago. He said the church held services in that building for 19 years before the congregation relocated. He heard about the fire and drove to the site.

"It was a sad moment for me," he said.

Officials are trying to contact the current owner of the building, Rutledge said.

No injuries were reported, he said, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
