Drivers speeding through school zones is a persistent problem in Fayetteville, so the city is exploring one possible option to crack down on it.

The City Council heard a proposal at its Dec. 5 meeting from Blue Line Solutions, which makes an automated speed enforcement system using cameras to document offenders. The company did a five-day traffic study outside six Fayetteville schools and found more than 32,000 drivers going 11 mph or more over the limit during school hours. The company is proposing a partnership with the city to install three warning signs and one radar-based camera in each school zone at no cost to the city, and in return would be paid 35 percent of the fines paid. All violation images would be reviewed by the police department, which would issue the citations.

The council voted 5-0 to allow Police Chief Scott Gray to proceed with further discussions, which will also include talks with the Fayette County Board of Education.
