Fayette County authorities on Friday asked for the public's help after a fatal shooting left a 44-year-old mentally and physically disabled woman dead on her front porch.

The woman and her 78-year-old grandmother interrupted a burglary at their residence on Bohannon Road in unincorporated north Fayette just before the shooting, sheriff's spokesman Brent Rowan told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The identities of the shooting victim and her grandmother were not disclosed, but Rowan said the victim lived with her grandmother because the victim required constant care because of her mental and physical disabilities.

The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. Friday, the spokesman said.

"The victim and her grandmother left the residence earlier that morning to run errands locally," Rowan said in a statement. "When the women returned to the home they encountered an unknown number of suspects burglarizing the residence."

Rowan said they immediately exited the front door. "It is believed the suspect(s) also exited the residence, using a rear door, and fled to an awaiting vehicle," said Rowan, describing it as either a gray or silver four-door passenger car.

Rowan said at least one shot was fired as the suspects fled, striking the 44-year-old woman.

After being questioned, the grandmother was allowed to leave the scene with a relative, Rowan said.

Rowan said neither the grandmother nor anyone else was injured.

Anyone with information on the case is asked contact Detective J. Shelton at the Fayette County Sheriff Office at 770-716-4750 or 770-716-4777, or email him at joshs@fayettecountyga.gov.
