A biology teacher at Sandy Creek High School in Fayette County has won a $750 grant to establish a garden that will serve as an outdoor classroom.
Jill Lloyd was one of eight educators across the state to receive funding from the Georgia Science Teachers Association for creative classroom projects. Her grant proposal was titled “Bring the Classroom to the Garden,” and its goal is to create a sustainable garden for vegetables and other plants that can be used by students at Sandy Creek as well as neighboring Robert J. Burch Elementary and Flat Rock Middle schools for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) lessons. Lloyd will use the funds to buy landscape fabric, fencing and one book for each vegetable grown in the garden.
Various lessons related to the garden will be developed for different age groups.
