The issue of how to reopen Fayette County schools was a major part of the Board of Education’s June 1 work session.

The discussion, the recording of which is at www.fcboe.org/Page/167, was led by Superintendent Joseph Barrow Jr., who also posted a 7-minute video update on Facebook and YouTube on Wednesday. Barrow said a task force of administrators is devising a framework that must factor in the need for education as well as COVID-19 safety precautions.

He acknowledged that restarting classes is important to parents who need childcare for younger students. Barrow said various options are being considered, including a possible combination of virtual learning as well as bringing students back to school sites, with buses and classrooms modified for social distancing.

Decisions will be based on continued feedback from parents and teachers; Barrow asked that parents check their email frequently for updates and surveys, and to send comments to Public Information Officer Melinda Berry-Dreisbach at berrydreisbach.melinda@mail.fcboe.org.

“We’re working to build the best plan that we can that will give parents and students and staff some choice,” Barrow said.

However, the plan will not be finalized until after mid-July, even though the current academic calendar calls for classes to resume Aug. 3.
