Pro-annexation candidate Jonathan Elmore’s convincing 139-vote victory over Jim Hutchens in last Tuesday’s Avondale Estates mayoral race finally gets the city a sponsor for its annexation master plan. State Representative Karla Drenner, D-Avondale Estates, will submit the bill next week, assuming she gets the required nine signatures from DeKalb County delegates.

“Based on the election,” Drenner told the AJC Friday, “their [annexation] resolution is well founded. Holding it for another year doesn’t secure anything for Avondale. Better to introduce it now and see where it goes.”

Meantime rumors circulated this week that an updated city of Greenhaven map overlapped with some or much of Avondale’s wish list.

In an email to the AJC, Kathryn Rice, chairman for Concerned Citizens for Cityhood in South DeKalb, wrote, “Our map does not include any areas that Avondale wishes to annex, at least not to our knowledge.”

But Drenner isn’t so sure.

“Their bill and map don’t coincide,” she said. “But if there is an overlap I’m pretty sure it’s not intentional. In any case, there won’t be a big fight [for borders] like Tucker and LaVista Hills.”
