A major law enforcement reform order handed down on Sept. 08, 2016 by Gov. Nathan Deal, called for an increase in the mandated training for law enforcement officers. The Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council amended the continuing education requirements for sworn peace officers. These amendments included training on use of force, the concepts of effective policing and the importance of building positive community relations.

Effective Jan. 01, all law enforcement officers are required to complete annual training in these areas.

As of June 19, all sworn peace officers of the Dunwoody Police Department have completed the newly required annual training on Use of Force and De-escalation Options for Gaining Compliance and one of three Community Relations courses, which include Cultural Awareness, Fostering Positive Community Relations, and Police Legitimacy and Procedural Justice for Community Relations, according a news release.
