Downtown Decatur Neighbors has asked the city to construct six new mid-block crosswalks with roughly 25 percent of all Decatur residents now living downtown, primarily in condos and apartments.

Mid-block crosswalks include curbing, bulb outs, medians and concrete protection, costing anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000, according to DDN President George Dusenbury.

The DDN is also asking that a number of existing crosswalks get “sprucing up,” including intersections where there are no or only partial crosswalks.

In its report the DDN asks the city to consider a new style crosswalk, sometimes called a “basket junction,” where the intersection is painted with diagonal lines. The DDN has suggested Commerce Drive/East Ponce de Leon Avenue for this style, where pedestrians push a button and traffic lights turn red in all directions allowing for conventional and diagonal crossing.

Several DDN members will meet with city staffers this week to further discuss this proposal.
