Darnell Fullum, the deputy fire chief in Fulton County, will become DeKalb County’s new fire chief, interim DeKalb CEO Lee May will announce Monday.

Fullum joined the Fulton department in 1995 and gradually worked his way up to deputy chief, a job he has held since 2008. He was named one of two finalists for the top job in DeKalb late last year.

He was up against Teresa Everett, the fire chief in Gary, Ind. whose career has been marked by short tenures in several fire departments and 11 years working in various jobs in schools, government agencies and nonprofits.

May said he felt Fullum would be a better, long-term fit for the department. He will make his announcement for the job, which pays up to $150,000 a year, at 10 a.m. at DeKalb fire headquarters in Tucker.
