DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond, Department of Watershed Management and city leaders will restock Crystal Pond in Clarkston with more than 1,600 fish, according to a press release. CEO Thurmond committed to fully restocking the lake after the Feb. 18 sewer spill caused by a blockage of grease, disposable diapers and wipes in an eight-inch sewer line. Remediation and restoration efforts were completed in 28 days and the county is focused on completing additional assessments and repairs to prevent future spills.
Community members are urged to witness the replenishing of the lake with fish of five different species including Black Crappy, Bluegill, Largemouthed Bass, Red Breast Sunfish, Green Sunfish with pondweed covered with algae-eating Carp being a possible addition at a later date. These fish will be travelling all the way from Little Rock, Arkansas by way of Forsythe County to begin a new chapter in the lake in the city of Clarkston, across from Milam Park.
The ceremony is set to take place at 2 p.m. April 18 at Crystal Pond, 1089 Cleavemark Drive, Clarkston.
