Decatur will replace five existing mid-block crosswalks downtown and build two new ones, Assistant City Manager David Junger announced during Tuesday’s commission meeting.
The existing crosswalks, though only about five years old, are fracturing. Junger said the replacements will get built with a concrete or asphalt base, then get a colorful paint design before receiving a thermo plastic covering. Some of the crosswalks will be raised, and the lifespan should be 10 to 12 years.
Brand new crosswalks will get built in the vicinity of 315 Ponce De Leon Avenue and on East Trinity Place between Church Street and North McDonough Road.
Bidding on the work should begin soon, Junger said, and he hopes construction will commence before June. Depending on price, still undetermined, the work may go into next year.
