Decatur’s commission gets a repeat performance of consultant Cooper Carry’s April 30 detailing of three early-draft concepts for developing the old United Methodist Children’s Home property. The presentation comes during a work session 6:30 p.m. May 7 at Decatur’s city hall, 509 N. McDonough St.

Though intended for commissioners, who will approve a final master plan, probably in August or September, the work session is open to the public, along with the 7:30 regular meeting.

The commission is also getting asked to amend the city charter so the city’s school board can determine its own compensation. If approved, the amendment comes before the city commission for a second approval on May 21 before becoming official.

Unlike the city commission, the school board can’t vote itself a compensation increase. For years board members have been paid $50 per meeting, counting work sessions and special called meetings. They don’t get paid for executive sessions, which can sometimes last for hours. Generally a board member makes $1,000 annually.

The board is reportedly still divided on what to seek for its stipend.

In August 2017, the city commission approved its first raise in 23 years, the pay for commissioners jumping from $4,800 to $12,000 annually while the mayor improved from $6,000 to $15,000.
