Decatur’s commission has approved a pilot program for street musicians and other entertainers to perform in clearly defined areas throughout the city and Oakhurst’s business district. These include the south lawn of old courthouse, the MARTA plaza, West Ponce De Leon Drive in downtown (except frontages of residential buildings) and Oakhurst’s Harmony Park.
The project, also known as a “Buskers Program,” begins immediately and runs through the end of the year, after which a more permanent program will get considered.
“Right now we don’t have many buskers,” said Angie Macon, Executive Director of the Decatur Arts Alliance. “The purpose is to attract more entertainers, street performers and artists showcasing their talent. We want Decatur to be alive with music.”
Performers must contact the Arts Alliance and complete an application to receive a permit valid for one month.
Buskers can collect tips but can’t directly solicit for tips. They must be at least 20 feet removed from another street performer and 10 feet away from building entrances/exits. No amps are allowed.
