The Cumming City Council this week purchased police weaponry with backup capability in mind.

A city spokeswoman said the $11,241 agenda item included the purchase of 16 Glock 9 mm backup weapons and ankle holsters. Police Chief Casey Tatum told council members that currently the police department doesn’t furnish backup weapons for its sworn personnel so if an officer’s duty weapon malfunctions or they lose possession of their firearm, they’re left without one. The cost of the backup weapons was $7,584.

The council also approved trading in 23 Glock 40-caliber duty weapons for Glock 9 mm pistols. The city said those firearms were purchased in 2012, so they were due to be replaced.
