Students lead green day of service

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School students and staff will hold a Green Apple Day of Service 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. today, 680 West Peachtree Street, NE.

More than 200 volunteers are expected to participate in cleanup activities. Students will launch recyling and environmental awareness programs.

Hunger campaign calls on locals to collect food

Fulton County Youth Commissioners’ annual hunger campaign calls on local organizations to help feed families in need Oct. 6 through Nov. 7.

The competitive event, “Can-Paign to Fight Hunger” encourages organizations to fill barrels with non-perishable goods during the time period. Atlanta Community Food Bank, a partner in the campaign, wants to fill 50 barrels of food. Each barrel can hold enough food to feed 285 families.

Voting ends Sunday for Duluth Dog Mayor

Duluth residents have until Sunday to vote for Hemi, the Pomerania, Sophie, the Yorkshire Terrier, Penny the Jack Russell Terrier/Beagle or Larry and Lyla, the Pookimos for the city’s next Chattapoochee Mayor at Duluth Dog Park at Rogers Bridge. Piedmont Henry Hospital will be giving free skin cancer screenings at the 3rd annual Bridgefest Community Health Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Ted Strickland Community Center, 130 Berry Street in Stockbridge. Cherokee okays design work on major park

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners Tuesday night OKd an up-to $557,000 contract with Gwinnett-based Lose and Associates to design the for-now-named “East Park” on Ga. 20 east of Canton. Parks head Bryan Reynolds expects the 149-acre site will include athletic fields and baseball/softball diamonds, tennis courts, a playground and pavilions. A series of public input meetings are set for this fall. Design work is expected to finish in the summer of 2015, with construction on the $9 million facility starting either in summer or fall. First time homebuyer workshop

The Urban League of Greater Atlanta will hold a free workshop for first time homebuyers 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, at Decatur Public Library, 215 Sycamore Street.

Their goal is to improve access to affordable housing through counseling services and information sessions.
