Unsuitable soils and design modifications to mitigate impacts to nearby neighborhoods will require $775,500 in additional spending – to be covered by the state – for the Kimball Bridge Road widening project in Johns Creek.

The Johns Creek City Council approved a change order and construction contract amendments to contractor Vertical Earth. The Georgia Department of Transportation has agreed to cover all of the added expenses, bringing the project’s total cost to $10.4 million. No local match is required.

Unsuitable soils will require additional foundation backfill material, revisions to wall types, more materials for asphalt leveling, and grading challenges near a power distribution property, staff said. Also, to lessen the impact on the neighbors, a design change will require more guardrails to meet code.

Kimball Bridge is being widened from two to four lanes, with new turn lanes, sidewalks and lighting, from State Bridge to Jones Bridge roads. Construction began last November and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2019.
