A 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged in connection with a scooter theft from a Vaughn Street home in Atlanta last month after his mother saw his image on TV and turned him in, police said.
The youth’s image had been captured on surveillance video of a July 21 theft distributed last week by police, according to a spokesman for the Atlanta Police Department.
Because the boy is a juvenile, police did not release his name or any other details of their continuing investigation of recent scooter thefts.
In the video, two young men, one shirtless, can be seen walking up the driveway of a Vaughan Street residence; two others keep watch on the street.
The group apparently left at some point only to return later. Eventually, the shirtless man is seen riding down the driveway on a scooter while the others run from the residence alongside him.
Since July 18, five scooters have been stolen and one hijacked. Police did not say Thursday if the suspect in custody might be connected to the other thefts.
Scooters, which can cost as much as $8,000, have been taken from Gilbert Street S.E. on July 18; E. Confederate Avenue S.E. on July 18; LaFrance Street N.E. on July 19; Vaughn Street S.E. on July 22; and Virginia Avenue N.E. on July 23.
On July 27, a rider was traveling around 10 p.m. on Parkway Drive N.W. when five people ages 17 to 21 forced the rider off the bike and stole it, police said.
Police have urged anyone with information about the scooter thefts to call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477, or Atlanta police in Zone 6 at 404-371-5002 or Zone 5 at 404-658-6445.
