Enhanced warning signs will be installed at the Concord Road Covered Bridge near Smyrna.

A contract for $85,343 was awarded Jan. 23 by a unanimous vote of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners to Suncoast Restoration and Waterproofing, bringing their total contract to $888,302 for the bridge’s renovation.

Also, the contract completion date was extended through May 11.

Suncoast will install LED flashing warning signs above each approaching lane to be activated when the new radar detection system identifies over-height vehicles.

This bridge has been undergoing extensive rehabilitation because of repeated vehicle impacts - about 12 each year, according to a county statement.

That rehabilitation has included installation of steel-stiffening frames inside the bridge, cleaning and painting the existing steel, repairing one of the bridge supports, replacing the guardrail and repairing the roof and exterior siding.

With 7,000 to 10,000 cars traveling it each day, the bridge, which was built in the 1800s, has the highest traffic count of all covered bridges in Georgia combined, according to a county statement.
