The Smyrna City Council voted 7-0 Monday to approve an agreement with Cobb County that provides $400,000 from the county to coordinate traffic signal timing along the Spring Road corridor.

Ten traffic signals in the greater Cumberland/Galleria area will be added to the county’s adaptive traffic control system, Sydney Coordinated Traffic Control System.

SCATS uses a central computer to change traffic signaling automatically in real time for actual traffic conditions.

For $400,000, Cobb will upgrade vehicle detection sensors, make fiber optic communication connections and add SCATS licenses for the ten signals.

The system will begin next year but on a trial basis for three years.

Locations of the ten traffic signals are Cumberland Boulevard at Spring Hill Parkway and Spring Road at Cumberland Boulevard, Sports Avenue, Bell Drive, Park Road, Campbell Road/Carolyn Drive, Spring Creek Place/Countryside Lane, Glenroy Drive/Glenroy Place, Village Parkway and Jonquil Drive.
