The Cobb Police Department has a new drone. The $43,700 purchase was approved unanimously Jan. 23 by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners. The DJI Matrice 210 Quad Copter Drone has all-weather capabilities and a higher flight time with payload than their current devices, said Cobb Police Chief Michael Register and Cobb Public Safety Director Sam Heaton.

This drone also is equipped with a thermal-imaging camera to aid in traffic accident investigations, crime scenes, search and rescues and fugitive tracking. Its addition will increase officer/investigator safety at traffic accidents, reduce the amount of time taken to investigate traffic accidents and reduce the length of road closures for the community.

For $8,700, the department also was granted the Pix4D Mapping Software for use with the new drone and with the county’s existing quad copters, providing “an advanced level of functionality not currently capable with the existing software.”
