Cobb police should be able to pinpoint property crime “hot spots” more accurately with new equipment approved Dec. 12 by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

For three years, Latitude Geographics Group Ltd. will be paid $89,250 to install the digital Geocortex Crime Forecasting Data Model for integration with Cobb’s Geographic Information System.

By committing to three years, Cobb will receive a 15 percent discount on the software and a 100 percent discount on implementation services for cost savings of $30,910.

At the end of the three years, Cobb will have the option to renew the subscription for $30,000 a year.

Cobb will be able to identify risk factors for crime control, analyze crime trends over time, evaluate staff resources and reconfigure existing beats, according to a Dec. 12 memo by Information Services Director Sharon A. Stanley, Police Chief Michael Register, Public Safety Director Sam Heaton and Director Eddie Canon to County Manager Rob Hosack.

This solution will assist staff with identifying regional and seasonal “hot spots” for property crime and developing plans for crime reduction.

Cobb would be able to create data models to predict new “hot spots” and forecast decreases in crime that will assist with deployment.
