The Cobb County Board of Education approved 6-0 Wednesday board priorities for the Georgia Legislative Session 2017 that begins in January.

Board member David Morgan was absent.

Priorities include:

  • Strengthen and simplify accountability metrics for the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) to not be "overly burdensome" for school administrators and teachers.
  • Address methodology for the graduation rate by not penalizing schools if local school officials can demonstrate "reasonable, sustained efforts" to obtain required documentation but with no response from students, families or foreign governments.
  • Establish consequences for not meeting timelines on state assessment results. When scores from the state are delayed by weeks or months, "educators lose the ability to use such data to make immediate and positive improvements for students and schools."
  • Align flexibility for Strategic Waiver School Systems and Charter Districts with waivers of certain state laws, rules and guidelines in exchange for greater accountability for increased student performance.
