The Cobb County Board of Commissioners agreed last week to pay $82,079 for the third change order to the six-mile South Cobb Tunnel project.
This project begins near Maxham and Old Alabama Roads, continues southeast along the county line, turns east just north of I-20 and continues east to the South Cobb Water Reclamation Facility, 490 Lee Industrial Blvd. in Austell.
Parsons Water and Infrastructure will provide construction observance through the end of this month and pump performance resolution assistance afterward for this sewer conveyance project, expanding capacity and replacing aging sewer line and force main.
Cobb Water System Director Stephen D. McCullers said costs are expected to be recovered from Parsons of all three change orders, totaling $988,419, through liquidated or actual damages.
Parson’s original contract for construction management services was nearly $17.2 million.
The $305 million construction contract was awarded to Shea-Traylor, Joint Venture with construction starting in July 2008.
In August 2013, a snag occurred with the completed tunnel and its lift station during final testing when the lift station was damaged extensively by a flood.
McCullers said it will take “significantly longer” to resolve pump performance issues.
