Teachers and employees of the Clayton County school district could be looking at their second raise in two years under a budget proposal recommendation by the district’s superintendent.

Superintendent Luvenia Jackson made the recommendation at a work session Tuesday evening. If approved, the proposed budget would give full-time employees a one-time, one-percent bonus and a one-step increase based on experience, that could translate up to a 3 percent-raise for some. The Clayton school district has about 7,300 employees and more than 53,000 students.

Jackson said the increase would help the school recruit and keep top teachers.

“It is my hope that the board considers adopting the proposed pay increase to recruit and retain quality teachers and to increase competitiveness with surrounding districts,” Jackson said. “If we want the best educators and an exceptional education for our students, we must invest the resources necessary to secure top talent; otherwise, our children will suffer.”

The proposed pay hike comes on top of a one-percent bonus district employees received in 2013 and another one-percent bonus and 3 percent raise last year, according to school spokeswoman Jada Dawkins.

The school board will consider tentative adoption of the proposed $631.8 million FY 2016 budget on May 4 with the final adoption on May 26.
