Christmas in DeKalb County: 13 family fun events happening soon

By now you've heard the news, DeKalb.

It's the season, and this one is loaded with Christmas events around the county for all ages and tastes.

With that in mind, the following is a sampling of outings you and your family might try.


Christmas at Callanwolde

Nov. 28-Dec. 13. $20. Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, 980 Briarcliff Road NE, Atlanta 30606. 404-872-5338.

The Christmas event series includes a variety of holiday attractions including a massive lights display.

Winter Wonderland at Fernbank

10 a.m. -5 p.m. through Jan. 8, every day except Sunday. The cost of admission, free to museum members. Fernbank Museum of Natural History will feature two floors of festive trees decorated by cultural partners to reflect traditions and holidays celebrated around the world.

City Christmas Tree Lighting

6 p.m. Nov. 28. Free. Intersection of Clarendon Avenue and South Avondale Road, Avondale Estates. 404-294-5400.

The event will start with carol singing, followed by the lighting of the tree, followed by Krispy Kreme doughnuts and cider and a visit from Santa Claus.

Christmas in Avondale Estates Holiday Market and Tour of Homes

Noon-6 p.m. (holiday market), 3-8 p.m. (home tour) Dec. 11. Free holiday market, $15 in advance, $20 day of for home tour. Avondale Community Club, 59 Lakeshore Drive, Avondale Estates 30002.


Light Up Brookhaven

6-8 p.m. Dec. 8. Free. Blackburn Park, 3493 Ashford Dunwoody Road, Brookhaven 30319. 404-637-0500.

The Christmas tree lighting also includes photos with Santa, carols, a "Toys for Tots" drop off and even Hanukkah display.


Breakfast with Santa

8 a.m.-1 p.m. Dec. 10. $5. Chamblee Civic Center, 3540 Broad St., Chamblee 30341. 770-986-5016.

Spend time with Santa while enjoying breakfast and arts and crafts. Register online.


Light Up Clarkston

5-8 p.m. Dec. 3. Clarkston Women's Club, 3913 Church Street, Clarkston 30021. 404-296-6489.

Enjoy the lighting, music and a visit with Santa.


Breakfast with Santa

8-10 a.m. Dec. 10. $20 adults, $15 children under 12. Decatur Courtyard Marriott Hotel, 130 Clairemont Ave., Decatur 30030. 404-371-8386. Bring the kids to meet Santa during the breakfast buffet. Only 300 tickets available. 

Bonfire on the Square

7-8 p.m. Dec. 15. Free. Decatur Square, Decatur. 404-371-8386.

Join the community while roasting marshmallows at this event sponsored by the Decatur Business Association.


Christmas Tree Lighting 

6:30 p.m. Dec. 2. Free. City Hall, 3725 Park Ave., Doraville 30340. 770-936-3850.

Join Mayor Donna Pittman and city council for pictures with Santa, carols from the Dunwoody High A cappella Singers, and the lighting of the Christmas Tree.


Holiday Story Time

10:30-11:30 a.m. Dec. 7. Free. Stonecrest Library, 3123 Klondike Road, Lithonia 30038. 770-482-3828. Intended for kids 3 to 5 years old, the event features holiday stories, finger plays, rhymes, songs and a craft. 


Stone Mountain Christmas

Through Jan. 4. Times and ticket prices vary. Stone Mountain Park, 1000 Robert E. Lee Blvd., Stone Mountain 30083. 800-401-2407.

Celebrate the holiday season with a nightly Christmas parade, lights, Santa and live performances.

Snow Mountain

Select dates though Feb. 26. Tickets for adults and children are $28. Stone Mountain Park, 1000 Robert E. Lee Blvd., Stone Mountain 30083. 800-401-2407.

The park transforms into a winter wonderland complex with mountains of snow to use to make snow angels and build snowmen.
