Cherokee County residents will have an opportunity to comment on a proposed expansion of the Pine Bluff Municipal Solid Waste Landfill in Ball Ground.

The Cherokee Board of Commissioners has called a public hearing for 6 p.m., July 10, at the county administration building, 1130 Bluffs Parkway, Canton, regarding the issuance of a solid waste handling permit by the Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The Waste Management of Metro Atlanta Inc. landfill opened in 1994 at 13809 East Cherokee Drive.

It is 1,000 acres in size, but "only about 1/10th of the property is used for the disposal of municipal solid waste, which includes nonhazardous household, commercial and industrial waste, as well as construction and demolition debris," according to a Waste Management web page.

"The remaining acreage includes wildlife habitat and natural buffer around the perimeter of the facility," including 30 acres donated to the county for Dwight Terry Park, the website says. Information: https://bit.ly/2IW3uPn
