Cherokee getting federal funds for local transit

The Cherokee County Transportation System will receive federal funds to help pay for two replacement buses, among other expenses. CHEROKEE COUNTY

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved a contract with the state that secures federal funds to help pay for two new buses for the Cherokee Area Transportation System (CATS), along with operating expenses.

Cherokee is getting money from the Federal Transit Administration 5311 Rural Assistance Program. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, recipient agency for the funding, the FTA will provide $152,467 for operations, and Cherokee will have to match that with its own $152,467.

As for the buses, the federal government will cover 80 percent of capital costs ($90,521), the state, 10 percent ($11,315), and the county, 10 percent ($11,315).
