The Cherokee County Educational Foundation presented nearly $9,000 in Special Projects grants to district schools at its annual meeting, doubling the number of such grants given out compared to last year.

The biggest award — $3,000 — went to sponsor 20 scholarships for students taking part in the district’s high school credit recovery classes, designed for students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford them in order to graduate. The district also gave $2,000 to the Canton Elementary School STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Academy, to aid the school’s Care Closet, meal backpack and snack-fund programs.

The nonprofit CCEF aids the school district’s programs and students by raising money for areas not fully covered by regular school funding sources.
