Feb. 20-22 had been designated inclement weather school make-up days in Cherokee County, but in a one-time move, the school board changed them to regular school days – and promised to cancel them if the winter is mild and they’re not needed to make up for days missed.

“We are committed to permanently restoring the full, week-long, February Break beginning with the 2019-20 school year by using our Canvas online learning system when schools close for inclement weather,” said schools Superintendent Brian V. Hightower.

As the board adjusted the 2018-19 calendar to accommodate needed professional development and inclement weather, it gave students Monday, Oct. 8 (Columbus Day) off as a holiday. But it took back Friday, Dec. 21, changing it from a holiday to a regular school day.

Additionally, the board approved calendars for the school years starting in 2019, 2020 and 2021. They follow the “balanced calendar” format popular with students, parents and district employees, officials said, with an August start date and May end date.
