Emerging from executive session in a special called meeting last week, the Canton City Council without explanation fired its city clerk. Susan C. Stanton was terminated April 25 on a unanimous vote of the council, according to minutes of the meeting. Besides council members, Stanton, City Manager Billy Peppers, Mayor Gene Hobgood, City Attorney Bobby Dyer and Human Resources Manager Lorrie Waters were in attendance.
The clerk is an appointed position and Stanton had held the job since November 2011.
According to Canton’s city website, the clerk’s duties include keeping accurate records and minutes of council meetings, affixing the city seal to official documents, attesting the signatures of the mayor and city manager, maintaining contracts, ordinances, resolutions and agreements, and overseeing the adoption and publication of ordinances.
