The Canton City Council recently gave the green light to a Canton Parks & Recreation Advisory Board to advise elected officials on issues facing the parks.

Council members directed the city attorney to draft an ordinance creating the advisory panel, to be discussed at the Council’s Sept. 1 meeting.

As recommended by Parks Director Tom Gilliam, the board would advise on parks matters including recreation programs; research matters of policy, administration, reports and investigations; and review proposed ordinances and make recommendations.

Each of its seven members would have a term coinciding with the term of the Council member who nominated that person. Each elected official would appoint a resident from that official’s district or ward.

The board would meet monthly. It would have two officers – a chairperson, as principal executive officer, and a secretary, to keep the minutes and all board records and reports.
