During its Nov. 13 board meeting, City Schools Decatur announced it’s still on target for opening the new upper elementary school (grades 3-5) on Talley Street by next August. The building’s steel beams are now clearly divided into four quadrants and the elevated playing field is plainly visible.

Further, the search for the school’s first principal is now narrowed to three candidates, according to Executive Director of Schools Dr. Maggie Fehrman. Initially there were seven finalists, three internal and four external.

The remaining finalists receive interviews by a panel of eight this week with Superintendent David Dude making the final decision, likely the first week of December. The new principal begins work assembling their staff in January. It’s still uncertain how many new teachers the school will hire, though it’s estimated Talley Street will open with about 720 students (the initial building capacity is 750).

Meantime there have been 139 community submissions for naming the new school. The board is scheduled to choose a final name during its Dec. 11 meeting.
