Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management is launching a water supply program that will provide a minimum of 30 days of raw water by tunneling almost five miles between a quarry, the Hemphill Water Treatment Facility and the Chattahoochee River.

Electrical work near the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant will cause a busy Westside intersection to close for 10 hours a day over about three weeks.

The intersection of Howell Mill and Huff roads will shut down from Tuesday through Oct. 11, excluding weekends, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Traffic control measures will be in place to guide drivers around the work zone, but city officials are urging everyone to use caution and avoid the area if possible.

The work is in conjunction with a project that will build a five-mile conveyance tunnel to increase the city’s water reserve to more than 30 days.

The tunnel will connect the Chattahoochee River, Hemphill Water Treatment Plant and a 2.4 billion gallon reservoir at the former Bellwood Quarry.
