The Brookhaven Zoning Board of Appeals elected a chairman and vice chairman last week during its meeting. The new Chairman, Jed Beardsley, immediately took charge of the meeting after the vote. The new vice chairman elected is Hope Bawcom. The board had deferred the election of the chair and vice chair three times previously.

The board deferred action on the rezoning request of RaceTrac Inc. because the corporation wanted to revise its application. The corporation, working to open a RaceTrac at 3640-3646 Clairmont Road, will address its rezoning request during the May 18 board meeting.

The board denied the rezoning application for property located at 1497 Grant Drive because the request violates the city ordinance regarding accessory structure setback requirements. The applicant claims undue hardship to be in compliance, costing thousands of dollars to correct. The board disagreed, stating that any financial difficulty to comply is not considered a hardship, and that the applicant indeed had enough space on his property to comply with the ordinance without the variance requested.
