Brookhaven Police Department recently launched its Citizen’s Police Academy for Spanish speakers. The class runs Thursday nights from May 19 through July 21. The goal to give residents an overview of how the police department works, create a growing number of responsible, well-informed citizens about the police’s procedures and goals.

“This is a great opportunity to enhance the relationship between our police department and the Spanish speaking citizens of Brookhaven,” Interim Chief of Police Juan Grullon said.

Program topics include: an overview of the criminal justice system, basic constitutional law issues, the communications and 911 function, traffic enforcement, accident investigation, the meaning of “Use of force,” and Identity theft/fraud.

A criminal background check is required for all applicants and the police department reserves the right to deny enrollment to those with a criminal history.
