Several DeKalb and Atlanta graduates were recognized last week by Rep. John Lewis for their appointments to the nation's military service academies. Most of the students took part in the 5th Congressional District's service academy program. They are: Willem Schuttler, Atlanta International School, appointed to the U.S. Military Academy; Reade Anderson Midyette, Pace Academy; U.S. Air Force Academy; Connor Ratcliffe, St. Pius X, U.S. Military Academy; John Goulding, Pace Academy, U.S. Naval Academy; Taylor Wilby, The Lovett School, U.S. Military Academy; Jacob Grant, Galloway School,U.S. Military Academy; Madeline Driscoll-Miller, St. Pius X, U.S. Naval Academy; Marcus Mack, North Atlanta High School, U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School; Gregory Eason, Mays High School, U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School; Isaac Seals, Decatur High School, U.S. Naval Academy; Nijel Rogers, Mays High School, U.S. Military Academy; Frances Depree, The Westminster Schools, U.S. Naval Academy.

Cadet colonels Michael Barlow, 18, and Rufus Huffman, 17, both of Atlanta's Henry Grady High School, have earned scholarships to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Barlow and Huffman were in Grady's Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC). Grady High's JROTC earned eight trophies this year. Barlow earned the position of Brigade Commander as  a junior.

Students in Kristen Drake's second grade class at DeKalb's Hightower Elementary School get computerized assignments tailored to their needs. Drake has designed more than 500 such assignments earning recognition from Microsoft’s Innovative Education Forum.Drake will share ideas with other finalists later this month and compete for a chance to attend the worldwide finals.

Emma Jensen, a 2011 graduate of Tucker High School, has been named the Tucker Civic Association's "Student of the Year in Community Service" award for her work with the school's Habitat for Humanity Club.
