Cassandra Oliver and Caitlin Hollis, 2012 graduates of Buford High School, have received $1,500 scholarships from the Buford Lanier Woman's Club. Cassandra graduated with a 4.0 grade point average and will attend Vanderbilt University. Caitlin had a 3.8 GPA and will attend the University of Georgia.

The Odyssey of the Mind Team at Holy Redeemer Catholic School in Johns Creek placed second in the World Finals. Winning team members were: Catie Shelly, Lindsay LeCoq, Jack Arndt, Spencer Arndt, Nick Pittman, Andrew Hopkins and Thomas Navarro. Over 800 teams from the U.S. and 30 countries competed in May at the World Championships at Iowa State University. Odyssey of the Mind promotes creative thinking. Teams worked for months on one of five problems, including one known as the "Ooh-motional vehicle problem." Teams had to design, build and drive a vehicle that traveled a course where it encountered three situations. The vehicle had to display a different human emotion for each encounter and travel in multiple directions using different sources of power.

Benjamin C. McFarlin, a rising senior at Creekview High School in Canton, and Jed Wheeler, a rising senior at Loganville High School represented Georgia at the American Legion's Boys Nation event July 20-28 on the campus of Marymount University in Arlington, Va. Payton Jonson, a rising senior at Strong Rock Christian School in Locust Grove was named as an alternate. This is the 66th year Boys Nation has been held in and around the nation's capitol. Students selected for the program are considered to be future leaders in government, business and the military. Two students are selected from each state for an intense week of learning about the structure and function of federal government.
