Bathtub Races return to Southern Poly

Why race a car when you can race a bathtub instead? Not just any tub, but a  cast-iron bathtub weighing about 200 pounds.

Southern Polytechnic State University will revive its Bathtub Race this Saturday after a 20-year break.

The race's roots trace back to the 1960s when some engineering students converted an old cast iron tub into a cooler for weekend fraternity parties. When the tub became too heavy to carry, students added wheels. Soon after, all the fraternities decided to build their own wheeled-tubs and hold a race around the perimeter of the campus.

The competition ended in the early 1990s as the campus increased in size and liability concerns grew.

This year's race was resurrected as part of the festivities for alumni weekend. The competition is scheduled to begin at noon on campus in Marietta.
