Avondale Estates’ gave a first reading Monday regarding compensation for the board of mayor and commissioners. The proposal asks for $400 a month each for four commissioners and $600 a month for the mayor.

The third and final reading is scheduled for June, when commissioners will also vote on the ordinance. For now, pending public input over the next two months, four commissioners favor compensation with only Terry Giager solidly against.

“I guess I’m old school,” said Giager, “but I think this is our civic duty.”

Avondale Estates is one of the few and possibly the state’s only city not paying its board anything.

Cities similar in size to Avondale Estate’s population of 3,360 include Tybee Island (3,000) which pays commissioners $500 per month, the mayor $700 per month; Alma (3,500), $400 and $800; Blackshear (3,500), $150 and $400; Ringgold (3,700), $300 and $500; Hiram (3,700), $250 and $750.

Decatur, at 19,886, pays its mayor $500 monthly and commission $400 monthly.
