Saturday morning about 25 volunteers and members of Avondale Estates’ Art Alliance began clearing the North Avondale Road site that will house a temporary pop-up park called The Art Lot.
It’s anticipated The Art Lot will officially receive funding during a commission meeting 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Avondale Estates City Hall, 21 N. Avondale Plaza. The commission’s expected to approve a temporary intergovernmental agreement with the city’s Downtown Development Authority for $36,000 over three months.
The Art Lot in turn will receive $12,500 from the DDA and another $6,000 from the city. According to Mayor Jonathan Elmore, any additional money for the project must be raised by the Arts Alliance, either through donations or grants.
Project founder David Newburn said that volunteers have already built a number of pieces in his workshop, including seating, planters and modular walls they plan to move on site in a couple weeks. Newburn added he’s also heard from artists wishing to contribute, including Atlanta Beltline blacksmith and metal sculptor Jason Smith.
Newburn plans on The Art Lot opening with a kickoff party and ribbon cutting on Sept. 1.
