Avondale Estates’ The Art Lot is holding a block party 5-10 p.m. this Saturday (Sept 10) on site, 70 North Avondale Road, with the official opening now slated for Sept. 24.
The event includes music, food and beverages, with attendees invited to help paint the furniture that gets placed inside the park.
The Art Lot is a temporary pop-up park to be built on property the city hopes to eventually develop. Through a temporary intergovernmental agreement the project received $6,000 from the city and $12,000 from the city’s Downtown Development Authority.
According to Mayor Jonathan Elmore any additional money for the project must be raised by the Avondale Arts Alliance either through donations or grants.
Project Manager Jen Singh (Arts Alliance president) said the official opening was delayed—initial start-up dates were given as mid-August and later Sept. 1—because the Lot needed site drawings and a building permit, which it received last week.
It’ll be constructed on a 50-foot by 25-foot space, once home to the Avondale Pizza Café. Singh hopes to eventually feature original art, painting, 3D projections, film/video, dancers and other performing artists.
