Possibly by fall, an indoor batting cage will be converted into a community center at Austell’s Legion Field, 5514 Austell Powder Springs Road. Initial funding of about $72,000 will come from the federal government through the Community Development Block Grant as decided unanimously Feb. 5 by the Austell City Council.

City staff will add a new roof and doors and install a small kitchen, an office and landscaping. The work will begin once the lease ends on April 1 with the Global Sports Association for the indoor batting cage.

Once opened, the community center will be available to nonprofits for summer camps and church groups.
