This month marks the 10th anniversary of Atlanta Streets Alive. Back in February, plans for the celebration were announced, but due to COVID-19 the celebrations are now virtual, according to a press release.
Organizers are asking partiticipant to join birthday celebrations on AtlantaStreetsAlive.com, where there will announcements about 2020 programming and the signature Atlanta Streets Alive tee.
The event takes place 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 20 and will allow participants to find out what this year has in store. There will be a higher-frequency of Atlanta Streets Alive events to more deeply embed this initiative into Atlanta’s culture. There will also be messages from the founders and key supporters of Atlanta Streets Alive.
After the event, the public is invited to continue the celebration on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by sharing favorite Atlanta Streets Alive photos from over the years, along with the #AtlantaStreetsAlive hashtag and a sentence about how this initiative has changed the way they experience the city.
In the 10 years, there have been 29 open streets programs, 83 miles, and 1.7 million participants.
The program started from a dream of a street full of people of all ages and backgrounds, walking, biking, creating and laughing, together. A street temporarily closed to cars, but open to people. Founders imagined residents safely enjoying their city, socializing with neighbors, and engaging in healthy activities.
Back in May 2010, this vision was turned into a reality by organizing the first-ever Atlanta Streets Alive which takes a valuable public space and opens them up for people to play, walk, bike, breathe, and make their own.
Modeled on successful events from around the world, including Bogotá, Colombia’s Ciclovia; Paris, France’s Paris Plage; and San Francisco’s Sunday’s Streets, ASA is part bike tour, part block party, and a great time for getting active, supporting local businesses along the route, people watching, and enjoying this amazing city.
