Atlanta would seek a $51.6 million loan to finance repairs to city wastewater systems under a resolution approved this week by the City Council.

The resolution authorizes the mayor’s office to apply for a Georgia Environmental Finance Authority loan, which taps federal funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The loan would have an interest rate no higher than 2 percent.

About $12.4 million would go to West Area Water Quality Control Facility; $7.2 million, to the East Area Water Quality Control Facility; and $32 million, to the Peachtree Trunk Stabilization Project.

“The two WQCF projects will rehabilitate, repair, and thereby improve the reliability and efficiency of two facilities that are crucial to the city’s combined sewer system,” a staff memo says. The Peachtree project “will rehabilitate (a) 90- to 96-inch diameter trunk sewer constructed over 100 years ago.”
