Atlanta police Thursday were trying to determine if three youths detained after trying to flee a southwest Atlanta apartment complex were involved in vehicle break-ins in the area.

Officers were at the Villages at Carver complex on Moury Avenue off Pryor Road early Thursday “in regards to possible vehicle break-ins,” said Paul Guerrucci, commander of the Atlanta police homicide squad.

Guerrucci said that around 5 a.m., “officers came upon a vehicle that was driving erratically.”

When officers tried to stop the Dodge Durango, the SUV rammed a police car.

At least one officer fired shots at the vehicle, which Guerrucci said wrecked a short distance away.

Police arrested three of the SUV’s occupants, but a fourth got away, Guerrucci said, adding that police believe the suspects are all juveniles.

Guerrucci said there were no “significant” injuries, and that police don’t believe anyone was struck by the officer’s gunfire.

“We’re still trying to locate that fourth person, but the three we have detained have not been injured by gunfire,” he said. None of the officers were injured.

Tammy Shaakir lives in an upstairs unit near where the incident happened.

“We heard five or six shots,” Shaakir told the AJC.

“I looked out my bedroom window and saw a vehicle come out with the lights out,” she said. “Instead of making a turn, he went straight across [the parking lot] and that’s when the cops just came from everywhere.”
