The city of Atlanta is getting help in replacing defective smoke detectors its fire department distributed several years ago.

Wells Fargo Insurance Services and Firemans Fund will donate $12,000 to help the city replace 1,500 of the smoke detectors.

The Fire Department revealed in May that free smoke alarms distributed through the Atlanta Smoke Alarm Program were defective. The city purchased the devices  from Silver Sails Inc., a vendor based in Calabasas, Calif., in late 2005 and early 2006.  The city later discovered  the devices had counterfeit Underwriters Laboratories labels affixed to the units.

The discovery  has prompted an FBI investigation, and the city said it was examining its legal options.
