The Atlanta City Council has approved a $607 million budget for fiscal 2017 that officials say is balanced, does not tap reserves and includes pay raises for police and fire personnel.
The budget, approved Monday on a 13-1 Council vote, designates $6.3 million in pay raises, effective Oct. 1, for about 1,100 Atlanta Police Department officers and more than 400 Atlanta Fire Rescue Department firefighters.
Also, the budget has $6 million for infrastructure maintenance for roads, bridges and sidewalks and for upgrades to critical public buildings and facilities. More than $400,000 will go for parks maintenance and the city’s first Comprehensive Center for Fathers, to mentor young men in parenting and other life skills.
There’s a $1 million reduction in worker’s compensation claims, and $3.6 million in expected revenue from new fees and fines. The budget also funds a pay disparity study to guide Atlanta’s equal pay legislation.
The total budget, including operational and enterprise funds, is $2.02 billion. A fully copy of the document will be available by its July 1 effective date at www.atlantaga.gov/finance
